Employee Spotlight – August – Brooke Allen

Brooke Allen’s journey at Washington Metalworks began when she was just 15, helping out a couple of days a week. After a break to attend college and university, she found her way back to WMW, this time in a more permanent role. “My dad, who works in the paint shop at WMW, told me about the ERP administrator position that opened up. I applied and got the role, I was over the moon!,” Brooke recalls. Interestingly, she now deals with her dad regularly since the final process of many projects she handles goes through him.

Transition to the Commercial Team

Brooke’s transition from an ERP administrator to a commercial coordinator came with its own set of challenges and rewards. “WMW advertised for a commercial administrator role, and my line manager recommended it to me. I was immediately interested because it was more customer focused,” she explains. Brooke’s social nature made her a perfect fit for this role. “I love interacting with customers, going out on visits, and meeting new people. It made me feel more active compared to sitting behind a desk all day.”

Role in the Construction Team

As a coordinator within the Construction team, Brooke’s responsibilities grew, allowing her to deepen her understanding of the business. “I was coordinating and dealing with all customer requirements. This role required me to delve into projects more deeply and understand the production and metalworking processes better.” she shares. This period was crucial for her professional growth, providing her with new skills and insights into the industry.

Current Role as Project Manager

Today, Brooke thrives as a Project Manager within the Electrical Sector. Her day to day duties are highly customer focused, involving constant communication through phone calls and emails, ensuring that projects are completed successfully and on time. “I’m the go to person for our customers. Recently, I’ve started getting involved in quoting projects, which has been an invaluable experience,” she says.

Mentorship and Support

Support from colleagues and mentors has been instrumental in Brooke’s career. “Obviously, my dad has been a great support for day to day stuff. Ian Barella is fantastic when I need another opinion, and Ciprian, our Project Lead, is always on hand to help,” she appreciates.

Achievements and Highlights

One of Brooke’s proudest moments was her promotion from coordinator to project manager. “It was a big step, and I’m glad WMW gave me the opportunity. Sitting in face to face meetings with clients on my own is something I’m now completely comfortable with, but a few years ago, I wouldn’t have thought it was possible,” she reflects.

Work Ethic and Attitude

Brooke’s positive attitude and strong work ethic are evident in her daily interactions. “I’m generally a very positive person, loud and bubbly. I like to think I get on with everyone. Being organised has definitely helped me in all my roles here at WMW,” she says.

Advice for Newcomers

For those just starting their journey at WMW, Brooke has some valuable advice. “Always ask questions, even if you think they’re silly. Everything is relevant and helps you learn. Be yourself and don’t be afraid to talk to people. Even in a predominantly male factory, I get on with everyone, and I encourage new starters to do the same. Never be too hard on yourself either!” she advises.

Future Goals

Looking ahead, Brooke is eager to continue developing her skills as a Project Manager. “I want to dive deeper into the drawings of projects to help with quoting in the future. I’ve really enjoyed my three years here and am excited to see what the future holds for both myself and WMW,” she shares.

Outside of Work

Outside of work, Brooke loves to travel and recently had an amazing experience in Greece. Her next trip is to the Lake District, and she looks forward to more holidays soon. When not travelling, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, exploring new sports in the city for brunch or dinner, and is never turning down a nice glass of rosé wine.

Brooke Allen’s journey at Washington Metalworks showcases her dedication, positive attitude and constant growth. We’re thrilled to have her on our team and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.
